Wisdom Teeth Removal
What Are Wisdom Teeth?
Third molars, or "wisdom teeth", are the furthest back teeth in the mouth. Most people have four wisdom teeth, but it’s not uncommon to have less (or sometimes more!). Often, wisdom teeth remain "impacted" under the gum line and cannot be seen without x-rays.
Why do we remove wisdom teeth?
Wisdom teeth can sometimes be harmless, but oftentimes they can lead to gum disease (periodontal disease), pain, or infection. In some circumstances, if not removed, wisdom teeth can develop cysts or tumors later in life. Wisdom tooth removal is a very safe procedure with fast recovery.
Dr. Best removes wisdom teeth under anesthesia for most patients. This makes the procedure a very comfortable experience for the patient.
Wisdom Tooth Removal FAQ
Where is the procedure done?
The procedure is usually done in the office under anesthesia. This will either be at the Brookhaven or Alpharetta location.
What should I do beforehand?
If Dr. Best discussed anesthesia with you, do not eat for at least 8 hours prior to your visit. Also, do not drink anything for 8 hours before your visit. The only exception is small sips of water, which you may consume up until 2 hours before your visit. Dr. Best will review your medications to determine if you should avoid taking them prior to surgery. You must have someone with you to drive you to the appointment, wait in the waiting room, and drive you home.
What can I do afterwards?
Dr. Best recommends relaxing afterwards and taking medication as prescribed for pain. Some patients will return to work the next day, but this is up to each individual patient and their line of work. You may eat soft foods like pudding, yogurt, smoothies, and pasta. Avoid excessively hot liquids (e.g., hot coffee or tea). After 2-3 days, advance your diet to eating anything you'd like, but please avoid crunchy foods (e.g., chips, nuts, seeds) for at least 10 days.
